TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an internationally recognised, standardised test that assesses the English proficiency of non-native speakers in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. TOEFL iBT is one of the world's leading tests for study, work, and immigration and is accepted by over 13,000 universities and institutions in more than 160 countries. Universities in the USA and other English-speaking countries often require it as an admission prerequisite. Globally, over 35 million people have taken the TOEFL test to demonstrate their English language skills.

The Cambridge Institut Munich is an authorised test center and administers the test on behalf of ETS, the TOEFL test provider. Registration and scheduling are done directly through ETS:

The TOEFL iBT® Test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

The entire test takes just under 2 hours to complete, but you should allocate 2.5 hours, including 30 minutes for check-in.

READING

35 minutes | 20 questions | 0-30 points
Read passages and answer questions.

LISTENING

36 minutes | 28 questions | 0-30 points
Answer questions based on short lectures or classroom discussions.

SPEAKING

16 minutes | 4 tasks | 0-30 points
Speak about a familiar topic and discuss materials you have read and heard.

WRITING

29 minutes | 2 tasks | 0-30 points
Read a passage, listen to a recording, and type your response. Explain and support an opinion in an online classroom discussion.

Comparison of CEFR and TOEFL Scores

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an internationally recognised system for assessing and describing language proficiency in six levels (A1 to C2). It facilitates the comparison and development of language skills.

Test Day Requirements

ID DOCUMENTS must meet the following criteria:

  • Original document (no photocopies)
  • Physical ID (digital IDs are not accepted)
  • Government-issued (a national or state ID from your home or resident country)
  • Valid ID (no expired IDs)
  • Matching name and date of birth (must match the registration details; accents are excluded)
  • Current photo (a clear, recognisable photo is required)
  • Signature (must include your signature that matches the name on the ID)

Please ensure that your registration name exactly matches your ID to avoid being denied test participation and losing your fees.

ARRIVAL TIME

Ensure that you arrive at least 30 minutes before your test time to allow enough time for check-in. For more information on test day procedures, refer to the Bulletin (detailed TOEFL information brochure, in English).

ITEMS

Do not bring unauthorised items into the testing room. This includes mobile phones, watches, or other electronic devices, as well as recording, audio, scanning, or photographic equipment.

TEST SECURITY

Test security is a top priority for ETS. There are guidelines and procedures that our test center must follow to ensure the test is conducted fairly and securely. Failure to follow the instructions of test center staff will result in denial of test participation, and your test fee will not be refunded. Any violation of security rules during the test or breaks may lead to removal from the test center and/or cancellation of your test results. All security policies and procedures can be found in the Bulletin.

TEST RESULTS

At the end of the test, your Reading and Listening sections will be scored immediately. These unofficial results provide an indication of how you performed. At the end of the test, the date when you will receive your official results will be displayed. This information will also be available in your ETS account.
